Montauk, Long Island

I really don’t have a lot of juice for this post.  We realized that making our vacation a ‘Coast-to-Coast’ affair was a mistake early on, but decided to make the most of it.  Cue: Hour spent at the pool.

While it didn’t provide a ton of experiences to review, I can tell you that it was exactly what we needed.

Here’s what we do know:

Kenny’s Tipperary Inn was adorable. The location was perfect for us, but also for probably anyone.  There was a little grocery/convenience store within walking distance, along with many options for food.  If I was rating the public areas of the motel, my rating would be much higher than if I were rating our actual room.  I am fairly certain we were actually in a room that they don’t actually rent to people.  There was a strip of carpet missing between the living area and the bathroom… to begin with. Completely opposite experience with the Inn.  Luckily, we didn’t spend much time in the room-  we were at the pool, instead!

We found ourselves wandering downtown Montauk a couple of times.  Lucky for us, we ducked into Naturally Good Foods, and found a delicious breakfast.  We had one other meal out- Sammy’s.  I have a feeling that our experience at Sammy’s was much like our room at Kenny’s.  It seemed like most people were happy there, but we couldn’t really say the same.    The food was meh, the service was meh, and really, the only thing we’d recommend was the view. Again- no one else seemed to be having the issues we were having, but for whatever reason, we did.

There were two other reasons we ventured out of the pool, and into the world.

We spent a wonderful few hours at Kirk Park Beach.  We absolutely lucked out by finding an open parking spot almost immediately, and as Cape Cod regulars, we were thrilled by the close proximity of the beach

from the parking lot. The beach wasn’t completely packed- which was a surprise, since it was a holiday weekend!

Somehow, we found a little spot to set up our non-existent camp-  we didn’t even bring chairs!  I figured there was no way we were going to be able to sit, since the kids were always all over the place at the beach.  Much to my delight-  our spot was right next to a family  that had shovels.  They were digging a hole, and the duo were fascinated.  They played in the water just a bit, but mostly borrowed the shovels and tried to help dig the hole.  Anything those kids did, the duo wanted to do, too.  I was actually able to sit and relax and watch them for a bit!  Beach Success!

Our final outing was to the Montauk Point Lighthouse. This was set up perfectly for the duo.  The entry fee included the museum inside the light house, and a trip up to the top of the lighthouse.  As you can imagine, the climb up to the top was a little strenuous, so it wasn’t something we thought the kids could handle.  The line was also really long, so we decided that only TT Dad would make the trek.  We gave him hugs and kisses, and asked him to wave when he got to the top.

The kids and I took a little walk, grabbed some bottles of water, visited the potty, and walked back up to the museum.  We found the perfect viewing area, and just as we looked up at the lookout, we saw someone who looked a little familiar!  I quickly zoomed in with my camera, and sure enough, there was TT Dad, at the very top, waving down to us.  We all waved, and he saw us, too.

Montauk is on our list to return- because there was so much that we didn’t get to try.  We were just too exhausted from our time in CA to really get it all done.  We still had a wonderful time-  we simply relaxed.  This was probably the first time we’ve had that opportunity with the kiddos.  Usually we are out and about, going everywhere and trying to see everything.  What a treat it was to just enjoy time as a family.

Thank you, Montauk.  We’ll be back!
