Beach Highlights

In the three (ish) weeks we spent visiting Oma & Opa, there were a handful of standout experiences.

We’ve already mentioned a couple of them-  The Aquarium, Wake & Bake Donuts, Oceanic…   We also made it to the Children’s Museum, Train Museum, and a few new (to us) restaurants.

The Children’s Museum of Wilmington can be found down a side street, in a very unassuming building.  Admission was under $10 per person (children/adult).  Memberships are available, children under 12 months are free, and there is a discount for seniors/military personnel.

The museum is set up in such a way that it never felt too crowded in any specific area.  We started off in the aptly named ‘Toddler Tree House.’ The room was large enough that they were able to plant a large tree in the center.  There was an opening underneath the tree, as well as a platform on the top.  The kids immediately gravitated to the tree, but quickly realized the other fun toys around the room.  In addition to the books, puzzles, and more quiet activities, there were larger ride on toys, and also foam mats to be climbed on.

Through every doorway was another exhibit that captured their interest.  We weren’t even able to see the entire museum, because the kids got caught up in every room.

In case you don’t remember, our kids love trains.  I know it’s a pretty typical thing to love, but these kids L-O-V-E trains.  We were thrilled to find the Wilmington Railroad Museum. The museum is filled with history, from actual train cars that children can climb in, to gallery displays of uniforms, gear, and tools.  Just past the gallery area, you will find model train after model train.  One room also contains train toys.  The kids were fascinated by all the model trains, and they weren’t the only ones.

The Railroad Museum hosts story time twice a month.  Details can be found on their website!
