“Are they twins?”
We were leaving the library when a young girl asked the question we hear everytime we leave the house. I’m not exaggerating. It is followed closely by “Better you than me”, “wow, you’ve got your hands full!”, “I’ve always wanted twins!” and “Do twins run in your family?” No, really. EVERY time. If you don’t believe me…go ahead and google. Any twin mom will tell you. People mean well, and I try to remember that when I get frustrated that I’m just trying to pick up a gallon of milk, and get home before nap!
The thing is… it’s not all about me.
(No, really. It’s not!)
We had stayed behind to help clean up after our annual Moms of Multiples Holiday Party. I know I have already gone on and on about how much this group has helped me over the past year, but I had one more reason to be thankful for them.
Each season, we have a family event. This party was the first time that the duo joined the other kids to play. They have always been more interested in watching than joining in. As I watched my littles run around and play with all the other kids, I realized how special this is to them. I may be annoyed by people stopping us every 50 yards to ask odd, if not a little awkward, questions about them… Those questions aren’t about me. It’s not all about me.
Yes, I’m a twin mom. But they are the twins. As they get older, and more aware of the world, and the people around them, it’s only a matter of time before they become aware of the things people are saying about them- about the questions people ask, and the comments they make.
As tired as I get of hearing these things, I can only imagine what my kids will be thinking.
The MoMs group may be my safe space… but they are also my kid’s safe space. They are not a spectacle here. They are just a couple of kids who are playing with some other kids, who all happen to have a built in best friend. Play dates with other twins are so important…. but so are other play dates!
Coming up we’ll talk about a few play dates we had in June of 2016, as well as some Father’s Day celebrations. We sure love our Daddy!
